ABOUT HAND UNIT

DSC_6715-min.JPG
"Formed in the spirit of dynamic growth, education and intellectual pursuits."

The unit has been accepting hand and microsurgical patients since it was started, in the early 1990’s. It was one of the earliest subspecialities of Orthopaedic Surgery.

We were the first to start seeing minor injuries to the hand separately, in the 1980s, calling it the Minor Injury Clinic. The problems seen in the clinic became more and more complex. Many distinguihed visitors were invited to give their opinions on these cases.

This became the Hand and Microsurgery Clinic in 1993 and at the same time a separate on call team was formed to deal with Hand and Microsurgery emergencies. This was a first for the country, where other centres saw all patients, including those with hand and microsurgery problems, in the same clinic as all other orthopaedic patients.

The current team is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jayaletchumi Gunasagaran together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Khoo Saw Sian. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Tunku Sara Tunku Ahmad Yahaya has retired and now acts as Honorary Professor and Visiting Specialist. Prof. Dr. Tunku Kamarul Zaman Tunku Zainol Abidin is at present seconded out.

We cooperate with the other units in the orthopaedic department such as Oncology, Foot and Ankle, Paediatric Orthopaedics and others. We also work with teams from the other departments such as Plastic Surgery, Oral Maxillofacial, Cardiovascular Surgery, Rehabilitation Medicine and Rheumatology.

With development of NOCERAL, we plan to improve and standardise our Basic Microsurgery Course. We plan to recruit more staff and run more super specialised clinics. We also plan to supervise more Masters and PhD students (by research) and run more world class research projects, leading to more and better quality publication.
