HAND UNIT UMMC
The unit has been accepting hand and microsurgical patients since it was started, in the early 1980’s. It was one of the earliest subspecialities of Orthopaedic Surgery.
We were the first to start seeing minor injuries to the hand separately, in the 1980s, calling it the Minor Injury Clinic. The problems seen in the clinic became more and more complex. Many distinguihed visitors were invited to give their opinions on these cases.
This became the Hand and Microsurgery Clinic in 1993 and at the same time a separate on call team was formed to deal with Hand and Microsurgery emergencies. This was a first for the country, where other centres saw all patients, including those with hand and microsurgery problems, in the same clinic as all other orthopaedic patients.
